Happy Birthday, Dan Marino

September 15, 1961 — Dan Marino was born.

There are quarterbacks with Super Bowl rings.

There are quarterbacks with gaudy statistics.

And then there was Dan Marino.

The Miami Dolphins legend finished his career with 420 touchdown passes, 61,361 passing yards and a Hall of Fame bust.

He also never won a Super Bowl.

Marino’s rocket arm helped redefine what an NFL passing attack could look like. In 1984, he threw for 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns—numbers that seemed almost ridiculous at the time.

He took Miami to Super Bowl XIX that season, only to run into the 49ers and Joe Montana.

And that’s the strange part of Marino’s legacy.

He has every individual credential imaginable.
He has the statistics.
He has the highlights.
He has the iconic No. 13.

Just not the ring.

Maybe that’s what makes Marino such a quintessential Sports Americana figure.

One of the greatest quarterbacks ever.

And one of the greatest “What If?” stories ever told.

Happy birthday, Dan Marino.
