On August 29, 1977, Roy Oswalt was born in Weir, Mississippi — a town small enough that it barely registers on most maps.

Oswalt, however, would go on to make quite a name for himself on a much bigger stage.

The right-hander arrived in Houston in 2001 and quickly established himself as one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball. With a fastball that seemed to arrive before hitters were ready for it and a competitive streak to match, Oswalt became the ace of the Astros.

He was a three-time All-Star, won 163 games during his career and finished his career with a 3.36 ERA. But perhaps his greatest moments came when the games mattered most.

In the 2005 postseason, Oswalt was nearly unhittable. He won the National League Championship Series MVP after leading Houston to its first World Series appearance.

The Astros ultimately fell to the White Sox, but Oswalt had cemented his place as one of the best pitchers of his generation.

He wasn’t flashy. He didn’t come from baseball royalty. He simply took the ball every fifth day and dared hitters to beat him.
