There were bigger personalities.

There were louder home run celebrations.

And there were plenty of sluggers who seemed to get more attention.

But somewhere along the way, Jim Thome quietly became one of the greatest power hitters baseball has ever seen.

Born on August 27, 1970, Thome spent 22 seasons making pitchers pay for their mistakes. He hit 612 home runs, drove in nearly 1,700 runs, and became one of the most feared left-handed hitters of his generation.

And yet, when people remember the great home run hitters of his era, Thome sometimes feels like the forgotten man.

Maybe that’s because he wasn’t flashy. He didn’t need to be.

Thome simply showed up, took his massive swing, and sent baseballs disappearing into the night.

His career included stops in Cleveland, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles and Minnesota, but wherever he played, the formula remained the same: patience, power and that beautiful left-handed swing.

In 2018, baseball gave Thome its ultimate honor when he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Six hundred and twelve home runs.

Twenty-two seasons.

One unforgettable career.

Jim Thome never needed to be the loudest guy in the room.

He just needed to hit the ball over the wall.
